Nonfiction

Old traditions, wild places, good books, strange histories, and whatever makes me curious enough to investigate.

The Waypoint

Nonfiction for the endlessly curious.

The Waypoint is where I follow the questions that make me stop, look a little closer, and wonder what else there is to know.

Here you'll find writing about history and old traditions, Yellowstone and the natural world, folklore and spirituality, books, reading, and the occasional curiosity that doesn't quite belong anywhere else.

Some pieces begin with research. Others start with something I've noticed—a wildflower beside a trail, an old custom, a passage in a book, or a bit of history I can't resist investigating.

Think of The Waypoint as a place to stop for a while, look around, and perhaps wander down a path you hadn't planned to take.

From The Archive

Earlier journalism and pieces from another chapter of my writing life.

Before I began writing the things you find here today, I studied journalism and worked as a copy editor for the University of Utah's student newspaper, where I also wrote arts and entertainment articles and blog pieces.

I once imagined I'd become a journalist. Life took me in another direction, but I never lost the things I loved about it: interviewing people, digging into a subject, following an interesting question, and turning what I discovered into a story.

These are a few pieces from that earlier chapter of my writing life.

And, well, I had to put them somewhere. :)
