Nonfiction Portfolio
Selected journalism, essays, and early published work.
I have a confession: as a kid, I actually liked those “What I Did This Summer” essays assigned on the first day back to school. (Don't worry. I'm not going to share those here.)
Many years later, while studying journalism at the University of Utah, I worked as a copy editor for the student newspaper and wrote a handful of blog posts and arts and entertainment pieces. At the time, I imagined a career in journalism—first in broadcasting and later in newspapers.
Life eventually took me in a different direction, but I loved interviewing people, digging into a subject, and figuring out how to turn what I'd learned into a story. I even discovered that deadlines didn't stress me out. They made me finish things. Apparently, I've always needed a little external motivation.
So, here are a few pieces from that chapter of my writing life.
Hey, I have to put them somewhere. :)
